Washington Memorial Heritage

The Washington Memorial Chapel was built as a tribute to General George Washington and the patriot soldiers of Valley Forge. The inspiration for the Chapel resulted from a sermon preached by our founder and first rector, the Rev. Dr. W. Herbert Burk, of Norristown, Pennsylvania. In accordance with George Washington's instructions, every year on the first Sunday in May a mass is held at the Washington Memorial Chapel on Route 23 in Valley Forge to mark the anniversary of the celebration at the Valley Forge encampment on 6 May 1778 of the Treaty of Alliance between the United States and France during the American Revolution.
